Choosing to start blogging in college can be a big decision. As a college student, you might not have a ton of money to spare that you can put into starting a college blog.
As someone who was in your shoes about 5 years ago, I’m here to give you some reasons why starting a blog in college might be an amazing idea for you.
I started my blog right before I went off to college, and I had to use babysitting money to buy my website. It was a huge investment for me at the time! (it isn’t insanely expensive, I was just broke lol) But, 5 years later, I am SO glad that I chose to make that investment and start a college blog. It’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself.
Here are some reasons why you should start a blog in college.
This post is all about reasons to start blogging in college.

Why You Should Start Blogging In College
1. You Could Make Money
It is so possible to make money with a blog. And a lot of the money that bloggers make is passive income, which means that once they publish a post, that post can make them money for years without them having to work for it.
Making money from my blog helped me pay the bills throughout college. I wasn’t making TONS of money because I stopped actively working hard on my blog after about a year (I’m back at it now, and I would have been making a lot more had I kept at it back then like I should have), BUT throughout college I was making money off of posts that I had written years ago, and it helped me pay for gas and groceries and textbooks and such. The extra little cushion that I wasn’t even having to work for was so helpful.
Blogging is definitely not a “get rich quick” kind of thing. It takes a lot of work to start generating income from a blog, but if you’re willing to put in the work, making money is a real possibility. Blogging is also the perfect job for a college student because you can blog from anywhere and work around your own schedule.
2. Brands Might Just Send You Free Stuff
This was one of my favorite things to learn when I first started blogging. Brands just randomly started sending me free stuff. My blog wasn’t even super popular at this point! At one point Pantene even sent me a huge care package full of insanely cute stuff, like obviously hair stuff, but they also sent desk decor!
Getting free stuff as a college student is SO nice. I used every free thing that was sent to me because well, I needed it all. I couldn’t afford a lot of things.
Throughout college I hardly had to pay for makeup, skincare, and hair stuff because I was being sent these things for free because of my blog. This is obviously not a given if you start a blog, but it IS a possibility.
3. Document The Memories
Blogging is an amazing way to document your college experience and share it with others. Having a blog in college is awesome because it gives you a really unique way to document your memories.
I absolutely love looking back at some of my blog posts and seeing what my life was like at certain points.
4. Share Your Experience
When you go to college it can be hard to stay in touch with everyone back home. If you start a blog, it will help all of your family and friends see what you’ve been up to. I am not kidding when I say that one of the main reasons I’ve kept blogging over the years even when I wanted to give up is because my grandma reads my posts to see what I’m up to.

5. Resume Building!
I’ve heard people say that a website is basically like a resume in and of itself, and I agree. It’s also a super cool thing to put on your resume, though. I mean, how many people our age get to say that they are the founder/ owner of a website? It looks really good to potential employers because when you run a blog you basically own your own business.
6. Creative Outlet
Having your own website is such an amazing creative experience. You get to choose what content goes on your blog, you get to design your website and make it look exactly how you want to, you get to design the graphics for advertising your post, and so much more.
You have complete creative freedom over your website. If you consider yourself a creative, starting a blog might just be a great idea for you.
7. Learn Sellable Skills
When you start a blog you learn SO many new things, and many of these things are skills people are willing to pay you for. Here is a little list just to give you an idea:
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
- Affiliate Marketing
- Graphic Design
- Marketing
- WordPress
- Theme Customization
- HTML
- CSS
Learning these things opens so many doors and gives you so many more opportunities to make money. After starting my blog, people saw my website and started reaching out to me because they wanted to pay me to build their websites for them.
So even though I wasn’t making an insane amount of money with my blog in college (again, because I wasn’t actively working on it through a lot of it), I was able to make tons of money through freelancing and customizing websites for people. I have also landed some virtual assistant type work because of the experience I’ve gained with my blog.
Like I said, sellable skills. The things you learn from blogging are things people will seriously pay you to do for them. It can give you some great opportunities!
8. Get A Start In The Business World
Starting a blog is a great way to get your foot in the door in the business world. Owning a blog is owning a business, if you treat it that way. By purchasing web hosting, you own your website and can potentially make income from it.
When I started this blog I was planning on being a chemistry major and pursuing research science. However, when I started my blog I have learned so much about owning businesses. I became so passionate about it that I decided to get a degree in Entrepreneurship and Venture Management. I feel like starting my own blog was really the little push that I needed to realize how much I was interested in entrepreneurship.
If you’re business-minded like me and have even the slightest interest in owning your own business, I really encourage you to try out blogging! It’s relatively cheap to start a blog compared to other businesses, and it’s a great way to see if you like being in charge of your own little business.

9. Networking
I have met and interacted with tons of amazing people throughout my years of blogging. Starting a blog can be an amazing way to build your network and to make lasting friendships with people who could help you make connections down the road! I have mutuals I started following when I first started my blog in 2017 that I still interact with and follow 5 years later. It’s really great to meet like-minded people that you wouldn’t have met otherwise.
10. You Can Help People
The most fulfilling part about having a blog is that you get to help people. It is honestly such a beautiful thing to be able to write something that people actually find useful. I just get baffled every single time someone emails me saying how much one of my posts helped them.
