Caves in Ohio– A visit to the Ohio Caverns

At the beginning of August my sibling and I journeyed to West Liberty Ohio to visit the Ohio Caverns. Here’s what our experience was like and what we did while there.

I’ve visited a couple different caverns in the past and each time I loved the experience. In early August I was in Indiana visiting family, and I decided I wanted to take my youngest sibling to go see some caverns for the first time.

The Ohio Caverns are well known caves in Ohio and they were the closest to us, so that’s where we decided to go. My sibling is very much into crystals and such like me, so this was something really fun for us to do together.

After a two hour car ride, we arrived at the Ohio Caverns. The first thing we noticed was how beautiful the grounds were. We came to see what was underground but we weren’t at all disappointed with the part that was aboveground. It’s in the middle of the country and the area was so peaceful.

The Natural Wonder Tour

After looking around for a bit we went and got our tickets for the cave tour. They have two different tours to choose from, the Natural Wonder tour and the Historic tour. We chose to do the Natural Wonder tour and the tickets were $19 per person.

We had to walk a winding path to get to the entrance to the caverns and it was very scenic. I really enjoyed seeing the plant life along the path, and the guide even pointed out some rock formations to us.

Inside the Cave

The inside of the cave is 54 degrees year round, so it was cool enough for me to need a jacket, despite the summer heat. There was also a lot of water throughout the caverns, both on the ground and dripping from the ceiling.

I thought getting dripped on was a fun part of the experience, but for people who don’t like being cold/ wet, a jacket with a hood is probably a good idea.

I really enjoyed getting to see all of the formations in the different rooms. The Ohio Caverns are famous for a few different formations that I didn’t get pictures of, but you can see them on their website.

Something that they had that was different from other caverns I’ve been to was the opportunity to get a picture in one of the rooms.

They have a camera set up that let’s you get a high quality keepsake picture. The picture below is the one that my sibling and I took and bought for $10.

Sifting for Crystals

After our cave tour, we went to the gift shop to get a mining bag so we could sift for crystals. I think that was both of our favorite part of the trip. It was so much fun to watch the water uncover our mystery crystals!

They had different sized bags you could buy. We each ended up getting the smallest $6 bags, but they still came with a ton of crystals.

Here are all of the crystals I got from my bag. My favorite was the big chunk of rose quartz.

We had a lot of fun at the Ohio Caverns. If you’re looking for a fun activity with family or friends, I definitely recommend trying out these caves in Ohio.
