How to be more eco friendly in your 20s

If you read my blog often, you know all about my passion for the planet. Over the past year or so, I’ve been on a search for ways to be more eco friendly (more than just switching to metal straws lol).

I keep learning more and more about things that are bad for the environment and things that I can do to help, so I decided to compile a list of all of the things that I’ve learned thus far on my search. Here are some of the things you can do to be more eco friendly.

Pick sustainable clothing over fast fashion

One way to do this is to buy your clothes from ethical and sustainable brands. My bestie Sarah made a list of her top 5 fav ethical and sustainable brands, you can check it out here.

Thrift

Thrift shopping is one of the best ways to get clothing sustainably. It’s awesome because:

  1. Everything is being reused, so you aren’t contributing to the clothing waste of the fashion industry
  2. When you thrift, you aren’t supporting the fast fashion industry, which is good bc fast fashion is problematic for many reasons aside from being bad for the environment (their labor practices, for example)
  3. It’s so much cheaper than buying clothes at other places!!

Refashion your clothing

Rather than throwing your clothing out, try making the items that you already have into something new! There are endless tutorials for refashioning clothes on Pinterest and Youtube, so just search “refashion” or “thrift flip” and you should be good to go.

You don’t have to be super crafty to refashion your clothing. Even just cropping a shirt or pants to make them cute enough to wear counts as refashioning. However, you could also get super creative like these two:

Stop supporting factory farming

I spent the entire spring semester researching factory farming for one of my classes. The biggest piece of information that I took away from all of that research is that factory farming is HORRIBLE for the environment. To be more eco friendly, it is so important to fight the factory farming industry. Here are some ways to do that:

  • Source meat from family farms
  • Eat less meat! Do meatless Mondays
  • More plant based diets (vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian)
  • Swap dairy milk for plant based milk

Make sustainable swaps

I recently made a list of all of my favorite swaps to make to be more eco friendly. You can check it out here!

Okay, those are all my tips for now! I hope you liked this post and choose to do some of these things to help the planet. If you have any tips that I didn’t include in this, please let me know! I am always looking for new ways to be eco friendly. 🙂

Thanks for reading, see you next time!
