self care for college students

Self care for college students is absolutely crucial in being able to survive college life.

However, it is something that can easily be pushed to the side (speaking from experience) because of how busy college life can be. When you have deadlines, social commitments, work, etc, it can get really hard to prioritize self care in college.

Even though it can be tough to prioritize, self care is a must if you want to succeed in college. Here are some reasons why college student self care is so important, along with some tips for practicing better self care in college.

This post is all about self care for college students.

Why Self Care For College Students Is So Important

1. Prevents Burnout

One of the main benefits of self care is that it prevents you from burning out. When you frequently practice putting yourself first, you learn the best strategies for balancing your personal well-being with all of your other commitments, which will help you from burning out.

2. Helps You Perform Better

Self care isn’t just doing something special for yourself every once in a while. It could be something as simple as a 20 minute break from studying. When you give your mind and body time to rest, you can come back and perform better than you would have without taking a break. By giving yourself a “brain break” you can clear your mind and return feeling refreshed and rested.

3. Reduces Stress

When you are stressed or have a lot going on at once, usually the first thing to go out the window is self care. However, often the best thing you can do in times of high stress is to take a step back and care for yourself first. Stress has tons of negative effects on both mental and physical health, but having a good self care routine can help you avoid that.

4. Teaches You About The Value Of Prioritizing Yourself

One of the biggest benefits of self care is learning more about yourself and your worth. If you value yourself and invest in yourself by practicing good self care, you show yourself that you’re a priority, which in turn creates self love. By practicing self care frequently, you will learn what makes you feel best about yourself, along with how you can take care of yourself and prioritize yourself in the best way.

Self Care Tips

So now that you know why self care is so important you might be wondering how you can start implementing it into your life. Well the truth is, anything in the world can be considered self care. It’s mostly about learning what helps you the most and what makes you feel the best.

Here are some self care ideas for college students.

Go for A Walk

Like I said before, sometimes all you need is a little brain break. You can take a short walk to clear your mind and spend some time with yourself. Getting out and getting fresh air in nature will help you feel so much better.

Pamper Yourself

This is my favorite way to practice self care. Anything that helps relax and make me feel good about myself is my go to form of self care! My favorite thing to do is take bubble baths or do a face mask. Take some time to get your nails done or help your skin glow and you’ll feel so much better.

Take A Break from Technology

Don’t get me wrong, technology is amazing, but sometimes we just need a break. If you are feeling overwhelmed, try turning your phone off for an hour to focus on yourself. Technology can be a major distraction that contributes to your stress. What better way to practice self care than to get away from a main cause of stress?

Write In A Journal

Another great way to practice self care is to let it all out in the form of writing. If you are feeling stressed and have a lot going on in your mind (or even if you don’t) writing everything out in a journal can be very freeing and therapeutic.

Sit And Do Nothing

In this day and age, we’re surrounded by constant stimulation. Whether that’s the sound of cars driving by, social media, tv, etc. One of the best ways to help your mind reset and give your brain a break is to just sit and do absolutely nothing. No music, no phone, nothing. Just sit there and be with your own thoughts. Doing nothing can be super productive.

If you have trouble being still and need at least a little stimulation, I’d recommend going on a quiet walk without listening to music or anything, or looking up a peaceful ambience on youtube and sitting and watching it for a bit.

Keep Up With Hygiene

When you’re not practicing self care or you’re going through a hard time, good hygiene can be one of the first things to slip and one of the hardest things to keep up with. Things like making sure you’re putting on clean clothes every day, showering every day, brushing your teeth twice a day, keeping your room clean, etc. are so important when it comes to caring for yourself.
