One of the things I completely forgot to think about when moving into the dorms was dorm room cleaning supplies. It’s one of those things you don’t realize you don’t have until you really need it!

Figuring out what cleaning supplies you need for your dorm can be really confusing. You want to make sure you have everything you’ll need, but you also don’t want to go overboard and take up a bunch of space with cleaning supplies.

Here are the dorm room cleaning supplies you ~actually~ need to get for your dorm.

This post is all about the dorm room cleaning supplies you need.

1. Small Vacuum

One of the biggest mistakes I made when I moved into my dorm was bringing a huge vacuum. It took up a ton of space.

You’ll need a vacuum for your dorm room, but I’d recommend getting a small one so it’s easier to store, use, and doesn’t take up a ton of space. I have this vacuum for my apartment and it would be perfect for a dorm room!

2. All-Purpose Cleaner

You really don’t need a ton of separate cleaning sprays for your dorm room. An all-purpose one like this should do the trick!

3. Antibacterial Wipes

I would definitely make sure to keep some disinfectant wipes handy. Dorms can be pretty dirty places, so you’ll want to have some of these on hand to wipe things down if need be, especially if other people in your dorm are getting sick.

4. Disinfectant Spray

I’d also get some disinfectant spray for the same reason! This is a good thing to have on hand if you just need to spray the air if people are getting sick.

If you don’t want to buy both disinfectant wipes and spray, you could probably do one or the other!

5. Broom And Dustpan

A broom and dustpan will be good to have on hand if you need to sweep up something that can’t be vacuumed (glass, for example). You could ~probably~ get away without getting this if you have a dorm room that has carpet. You’ll definitely need it if your dorm room has non-carpet floors, though.

6. Sponges

You’ll need to get some sponges that you can use to clean different things! You could use normal sponges, or I’ve also heard great things about scrub daddy sponges.

7. Dish Soap

You will need to have some dish soap on hand to do your dishes. This is one of the first cleaning supply essentials I realized I needed in my dorm room when I went to wash a plate and didn’t have any.

8. Trash Bags

Trash bags are another essential! What size you need will depend on what kind of trash can you’ll have in your room.

9. Toilet Cleaning Stuff

If you’re going to have a toilet in your dorm room, you’ll need some toilet cleaning supplies. Don’t worry about this if you’ll be using communal bathrooms, though.

10. Swiffer

You’ll only need a swiffer if you have a non-carpeted dorm room that has a hardwood floor or something. If you have a hardwood or tile floor, this would be good to have on hand!

11. Dehumidifier

If you’re going to be living in an old building, I’ve heard that tons of dorm rooms have issues with being humid/ damp. If this is the case, a dehumidifier would be good to have! I’ve also heard that some dorms will supply dehumidifiers/ humidifiers, so be sure to check before buying one!

I’ve also seen these damp rid moisture absorbers recommended for humid dorm rooms. So, those might be worth looking into as well!

12. Laundry Stuff

You’ll need some laundry supplies if you plan on doing your laundry on campus! I would recommend using tide pods (or any laundry pod) so you can just grab one when you need to do laundry instead of having to carry around a heavy jug of detergent (speaking from experience).

Also, this fabric softener is my absolute favorite. It smells heavenly! I would recommend the beads instead of liquid fabric softener for the same reason– it’s a lot lighter to carry around than a container of liquid detergent.
